There’s less than 60 days until summer, so if you are anything like us, you are probably hitting the gym, or pounding the pavement to ensure you are warm weather, swimwear ready. Athletic wear is your closet’s most odorous outfit, so to keep it smelling fresh it’s important to use soaps made from quality ingredients. Here are some tips to help you take care of your workout clothes!
1. After building up a sweat from exercising, it’s best to wash your clothes immediately, or at least set your clothes aside to air out. Sweaty workout clothes that are left in your gym bag or thrown into a pile of clothes can actually start to breed smelly mold and mildew spores that can become trapped in the fabric – even after washing! Look for athletic wear, such as styles offered by Athleta, that contain natural silver salts that give fabric antimicrobial protection, which lasts wash after wash and allows you to wear your garments more and wash less.
NOTE: For set in smells, eHow recommends soaking your clothes in a sink filled with warm water and 1 cup of baking soda at least an hour before washing them.
2. When washing, set the temperature to the hottest setting the fabric will allow. This is best for cotton garments that can withstand the heat without being broken down. However, for tech fabrics, wash your garments in warm or cool water and hang to dry to prevent pilling and to maintain the integrity of the fabric.
3. Avoid fabric softeners and harsh cleaners to avoid fabric damage. Use a mild, gentle detergent, such as Vaska laundry detergent.
4. Dry clothes can withstand your dryer’s hottest temperature settings. For workout clothes that can’t go into the dryer, hang dry in the sun. The sun’s rays are a natural bacteria deterrent, so take advantage of those sunny days to safely and effectively dry your clothes!
